Puerto Rico is blessed with beautiful beaches, but some of them are not easy to be reached and can only visited by taking a boat/water taxi. Even though we only had three days in PR, we decided to use one day to visit one of the most famous beaches in PR area: Cayo Icacos.
Cayo Icacos is a small uninhabited island off the coast of Fajardo. It’s a natural reserve with a diverse sea life and beautiful turquoise water.
You can get there via water taxi, which takes fairly quick leaving from the Marina, or also via a catamaran tour.
We chose to do our tour with Tobias Catamaran, a business that has great reviews on TripAdvisor. The trip included snorkel equipment / floats and lunch / drinks (including alcohol). We left from the marina around 9am and stopped to snorkel for approximately 2 hours. After that, they served lunch and headed to the beach, where we docked for another 3 hours or so.
Snorkeling was fun since the water is crystal clear and there were many beautiful fish to see. The only problem I had was that there were a lot of jellyfish in the water (the clear ones, not the red ones!), and many people from our boat got stung by them. I don’t know if it’s a seasonal issue or it’s normal to have that many jellyfish, so be careful once you’re in the water there. We also saw a stingray towards the bottom of the ocean floor. Unfortunately, I don’t have any pics in the water because we forgot to put our SD card in the GoPro.
The beach we docked at was like paradise. Unfortunately for us the weather wasn’t cooperating and it was cloudy with some showers while we were there, although the sun came out for a bit. I’m pretty sure it’s even more beautiful on a bright sunny day. The island was a bit crowded and other boats were docked right next to us (we went on a Friday), so perhaps during the week is a better time to go.
The boat was well equipped with floats and a slide that attached from the boat into the water. The crew was also extremely nice and helpful. We had a great experience with them. The tour starts around 9am and comes back to the marina about 3:30pm.
The cost per person for the Catamaran tour for Cayo Icacos is $73.00
They also have options for other islands. Check availability and prices on their website:
Transportation from the hotel to the Marina is not included in the cost. They charged $20 per person for a round trip, which I recommend if you’re in the San Juan/Condado area, since it’s over an hour away driving from Fajardo.
